Explanation
あります is used to state the existence of inanimate objects or plants. Whereas います is used for living things that can move on their own like humans and animals.
Examples
あそこに犬がいます。
Asoko ni inu ga imasu.
There is a dog over there.
机の上に本があります。
Tsukue no ue ni hon ga arimasu.
There is a book on the table.
